Over a year ago, I tried the Tandoori Chicken Sandwich from Così, and I was not impressed—on account of its small size and the fact it was a cold sandwich. I think it should have been clearer on the menu that the sandwiches are all cold and that only melts are served warm. I felt misled because the word “Tandoori” to me means that sizzling platter of grilled chicken served at many Indian restaurants. Tonight, I felt I should give Così another try.
I was much more careful this time and ordered the melt, the Grilled Chicken T.B.M., which stands for Tomato Basil and fresh Mozzarella. The sandwich was merely warm, not piping hot as I had hoped, but the sandwich contents were flavorful, the fresh Mozzarella being a nice touch.
My primary complaint about the sandwich has to do with the bread. Maybe I’m just getting old, but my teeth did not enjoy gnawing through what seemed like two tough, leathery crackers. Is this what flatbread is really about? It does not compare favorably with the flatbreads at Kabul, Husnu’s, or Caspian Cafe. The flatbread is supposed to be Così’s star attraction, but they really need a better recipe here. I did order the whole wheat flatbread, and perhaps their regular flatbread is better.
At $6.59, the sandwich comes with a small 1oz serving of Bunny Luv carrots right in the bag. It made me feel like I was on an airplane.
To supplement, I ordered a side salad, which is $1.99 if ordered with the sandwich but which otherwise would have been $5.49. The salad was fairly fresh, only a couple wilted leaves, and had small diced cucumber and other veggies. The salad came with more of the flatbread.
I rated the ambience low on account of the fact that the staff decided to prop the door open on a fifty degree day with driving rain. When a customer complained of the draft and closed the door, after that specific customer left, they propped the door open again! This shows either disregard for the dining experience, some bad restaurant design if parts of the restaurant are too cold while others are too hot, or slavish following of some corporate policy.
The service was OK except for a couple small glitches. The cashier did not seem to know whether I should sign after using my debit card. They also cleared my food before I was done eating my flatbread while I was in the bathroom. I thought by leaving my coat at the table that would be enough of a visual cue that I may not be completely done. Foolish me!
Così will do in a pinch, but I'm not inclined to return soon.
