Fruit of the Month for February - Grapefruit
fruit of the month picture
Botanical Name: Citrus x paradisi

Nothing says breakfast like the bold and sassy flavor of grapefruit in the morning. Its bitter tang wakes you up and whets the appetite. Some like to cut the flavor with a touch of sugar or honey.

A member of the citrus family, the fruit comes in white and red varieties and can be found in stores year round. The grapefruit is actually a hybrid first bred in Jamaica in the 18th century. Leave it to enterprising Texans to patent the Ruby Red variety of their fruit in 1929.

As for health effects, the grapefruit is high in Vitamin C, can loosen your bowels, and also increase the potency of drugs. It inhibits a certain intestinal enzyme, and as a result, makes drugs more available for absorption.

Segments of grapefruit enliven a tossed salad, and grapefruit flavor goes well with avocado, shellfish, and seafood, like tuna and salmon.

The Queer Supper Club (QSC) is a group of gay people and their friends who meet to have dinner once a week Saturday night. We have met consistently since 1995 and follow these rules:

  1. We meet at the UW Memorial Union, starting with a snack around 7:15pm, Saturday night. Look for the Fruit of the Month!
  2. In the summer, weather permitting, we meet on the Memorial Union Terrace. In the winter or bad weather, we meet in the Lakefront Cafeteria.
  3. We decide where to eat at 7:30pm, but not before, and leave promptly afterwards.
  4. We dine somewhere within walking distance of Memorial Union.
  5. Afterwards, we go to a coffeeshop.
  6. E-mail the QSC webmaster to join or simply look for our table, marked with the Fruit of the Month!
