Fruit of the Month for September - Cantaloupe
fruit of the month picture
Botanical Name: Cucumis melo

An ancient fruit first cultivated in the Nile Valley around 2000 B.C., the cantaloupe is now available throughout the world, peaking in the U.S. from July through August.

The cantaloupe is rich in Vitamins A and C. Its rough, webbed rind may be either ridged or smooth. Store an unripe cantaloupe at room temperature, and sniff its navel for sweet odor to ascertain ripeness.

The cantaloupe played an important role in the development of penicillin. Mold growing on its rind proved particularly potent and helped bring about mass production of the drug in 1945.

It is recommended you wash a cantaloupe well before consumption.

Graze

Graze, 1 S. Pinckney Street, is available for review.  The restaurant just opened as L'Etoile's companion restaurant in the glass-bank building on the square.  James, Ian, Jeff, Oliver, and Tin all have things to say about it.

The Queer Supper Club (QSC) is a group of gay people and their friends who meet to have dinner once a week Saturday night. We have met consistently since 1995 and follow these rules:

  1. We meet at the UW Memorial Union, starting with a snack around 7:15pm, Saturday night. Look for the Fruit of the Month!
  2. In the summer, weather permitting, we meet on the Memorial Union Terrace. In the winter or bad weather, we meet in the Lakefront Cafeteria.
  3. We decide where to eat at 7:30pm, but not before, and leave promptly afterwards.
  4. We dine somewhere within walking distance of Memorial Union.
  5. Afterwards, we go to a coffeeshop.
  6. E-mail the QSC webmaster to join or simply look for our table, marked with the Fruit of the Month!
