Fruit of the Month for February - Orange
fruit of the month picture
Botanical Name: Citrus sinensis

No fruit more closely approximates a sphere than the Orange. So be careful not to drop a bucketful in your kitchen!

This fruit is made into juice and marmalade, but it's not just for breakfast anymore. Witness its use in a tangy Asian orange sauce, as a ham glaze, or in Duck à l'Orange. Little mandarin oranges and toasted almonds also make a nice topping for a salad—when paired with a fruity vinaigrette, such as raspberry.

Originating in southeast Asia or southern China (which gives the orange its botanical name), it is now widely cultivated in areas with a consistently warm climate. California and Florida are famed for their oranges, but their markets are totally different. Florida almost exclusively cultivates juice oranges and actually imports its eating oranges from California.

High in Vitamin C, with its immunity boosting properties, perhaps you drink orange juice to prevent disease. But another interesting property of the orange (and all citrus) is that the white pith is high in soluble fiber. So eat as much of that bitter white membrane as you can stand—your colon will thank you!

Happy Year of the Dragon!

Oliver would like to wish you a Happy Chinese New Year, January 23rd. Xin1 Nian2 Kuai4 Le4! Dragon is pronounced Long4. The dragon is a mercurial, unpredictiable personality and is a symbol of imperial China. They say it is a year to take risks.

The Queer Supper Club (QSC) is a group of gay people and their friends who meet to have dinner once a week Saturday night. We have met consistently since 1995 and follow these rules:

  1. We meet at the UW Memorial Union, starting with a snack around 7:15pm, Saturday night. Look for the Fruit of the Month!
  2. In the summer, weather permitting, we meet on the Memorial Union Terrace. In the winter or bad weather, we meet in the Lakefront Cafeteria.
  3. We decide where to eat at 7:30pm, but not before, and leave promptly afterwards.
  4. We dine somewhere within walking distance of Memorial Union.
  5. Afterwards, we go to a coffeeshop.
  6. E-mail the QSC webmaster to join or simply look for our table, marked with the Fruit of the Month!
