Fruit of the Month for February - Pomelo
fruit of the month picture
Botanical Name: Citrus maximus

Though some may balk at its large size, size queens can rejoice, for the pomelo has landed. You'll find mountains of the fruit at the Hy Vee on East Washington as well as Asian specialty stores.

The pomelo is native to Southeast Asia, where it has a variety of uses. In Malaysia, the fruit may decorate an altar. The Chinese candy the peel and use the leaves in a ceremonial bath. The fruit is popular during the lunar new year.

An old fruit, the pomelo may have arrived in China around 100 BC from neighboring islands. It is an ancestor of the grapefruit, and with a slightly milder flavor, pomelo substitutes well for grapefruit in most recipes.

California produces the Chandler variety, first released in 1961. The fruit has sweet pink flesh.

The Year of the Tiger approaches.  By coincidence, the Asian lunar new year and St. Valentine's Day fall on the same day in 2010.  So grab your sweetheart and roar like a tiger for this rare occasion!

The Queer Supper Club (QSC) is a group of gay people and their friends who meet to have dinner once a week Saturday night. We have met consistently since 1995 and follow these rules:

  1. We meet at the UW Memorial Union, starting with a snack around 7:15pm, Saturday night. Look for the Fruit of the Month!
  2. In the summer, weather permitting, we meet on the Memorial Union Terrace. In the winter or bad weather, we meet in the Lakefront Cafeteria.
  3. We decide where to eat at 7:30pm, but not before, and leave promptly afterwards.
  4. We dine somewhere within walking distance of Memorial Union.
  5. Afterwards, we go to a coffeeshop.
  6. E-mail the QSC webmaster to join or simply look for our table, marked with the Fruit of the Month!
